Stevenson Esq. sent for H. C. Sidney Esq., an English born architect, engineer and landscape designer from Philadelphia.\u00a0 Mr Sidney was hired to choose a site and design a new cemetery for Cambridge.\u00a0 In 1859 Gardeners Monthly touted Sidney as the best landscape gardener, perhaps in the country.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On November 10, 1857 a meeting was held to entertain plans for<br>\nestablishing a suitable burial ground.<\/p>\n<p>About this time the Rev. Messrs. Gordon, Shortt, Stewart and Phillips,<br>\npreached eloquent and effective sermons to their respective<br>\ncongregations. Some of them from the text, Gen. 23d,4, \u201d I am a stranger<br>\nand a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a burying place with<br>\nyou, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So said Abraham to the inhabitants of Hebron in Canaan upon the death of<br>\nhis wife Sarah.\u00a0 These discourses served to awaken the public attention<br>\nto this subject more thoroughly than it has ever been, and as the result<br>\nthe Trustees were encouraged to go forward without hesitation to the<br>\naccomplishment of the purpose for which the Association had been formed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Sidney decided in favor of the present site and sketched a map of the same.\u00a0 On January 16th, 1858 this site was purchased and on April 1, 1858 Mr. Sidney commenced in laying out roads, walks, avenues and burial lots.\u00a0 Woodlands Cemetery was dedicated June 2nd, 1858.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/woodlandscemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Gray-monument-vert.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11\" src=\"http:\/\/woodlandscemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Gray-monument-vert-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"monuments at the top of the hill, Woodlands Cemetery\" width=\"300\" height=\"448\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/woodlandscemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Gray-monument-vert-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/woodlandscemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Gray-monument-vert.jpg 536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Since that time it has been considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the region.\u00a0 To add to the beauty, Mrs. John M.
